Overview Charity Care Risk Watch Playing it Safe Rural Health

For children younger than 14, the most deadly risk isn’t strangers or drugs. It’s injuries.

At Carle, we are helping keep kids safe through our support of the Risk Watch initiative. Since participating in a three-year pilot study in 1998, Carle has collaborated with area schools to provide comprehensive injury prevention education. The program targets students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade.

Risk Watch goes into every public school in the Champaign-Urbana area, last year reaching more than 30,000 students. We’re happy to report the effort appears to be paying off. The number of children involved in fatal injuries in Illinois has dropped by 8 percent since 1994, according to the CDC, in part because of education programs like Risk Watch.*

Together with support from area schools, Carle will continue working through Risk Watch to create safer homes and communities.

* Study examined injury-related fatalities in children between 1994 and 2004.
